I worked at Cetre Point in mid-December. Centre Point is owned by Arapahoe County, and I found that working there is much different than it is working at the Lakewood office.
Because of Karlis' agreement with Arapahoe County, a police officer is there. Whereas clients at the Lakewood office can walk right into the building, clients at the Aurora office walk up to a main door that is locked. Aurora workers watch the clients from a video camera inside the building, along with the officer, and then come down and let them inside. All this creates a whole different vibe, a much less friendly, more judgmental vibe. When people are right there in front of you, it's harder to talk crap about them. When you're watching them on camera with a police officer you're apt to look at them through that officer's eyes. You're seeing them, in other words, not as hurting people in need of help, but as potential lawbreakers. What's that expression? If you give someone a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail. Well, if you give someone a police officer, everyone starts looking like a bad guy.
